Medicare Supplement Plan L covers the basic benefits that all Medicare Supplement plans are required to offer, but some costs cover 75% instead of fully. Medigap Plan L covers 100% of the costs of Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to one year after the Original Medicare benefits are exhausted.
MEDIGAP PLAN L COVERAGE
Medicare Supplement Plan L covers some benefits in full and others at 75%. It covers the Part B coinsurance for preventive services, the foreign travel emergency coverage, and the Part A coinsurance at 100%.
Medicare Supplement Plan L covers:
- 100% Part A coinsurance, up to additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted
- 75% Part B coinsurance and copayment
- 75% of the first 3 pints of blood each year
- 75% Part A hospice care coinsurance and copayment
- 75% skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
- 75% Part A deductible
- $3310 pocket costs limit in 2022
Medigap Plan L does not cover the Part B deductible or the Part B excess charges. However, Part B excess charges are not common because most doctors accept Medicare Assignment, and if you live in a state that does not allow them, this is not an issue.
PLAN L OUT-OF-POCKET MAXIMUM
Medigap Plan L is one of two Medicare supplement plans that offer a maximum out-of-pocket(MOOP) limit. In 2022, the limit was $3310, but this typically increases each year. After the maximum has been met, Plan L will pay for 100% of covered services for the remainder of the year.
PLAN L ENROLLMENT
Individuals can enroll in Medicare Supplement Plan L as long as they have already enrolled in Original Medicare – Parts A and B. The best time to enroll is during your Open enrollment period, which begins on your Part B effective date. Individuals will have six months from that day to enroll in a plan with guaranteed issue rights.
MEDIGAP PLAN L MONTHLY PREMIUMS
Individual monthly premiums will vary based on which state the individual is seeking coverage in, which carrier they are purchasing from, and also individual factors like gender, age, tobacco use, and a few other details. The average cost for Plan L ranges from $80-$180 per month. In general, Medigap plans premiums are higher in states who have a higher cost of living.
